Post-Truth by Lee McIntyre How we arrived in a post-truth era, when "alternative facts" replace actual facts, and feelings have more weight than evidence. Are we living in a post-truth world, where "alternative facts" replace actual facts and feelings have more weight than evidence? How did we get here? In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Lee McIntyre traces the development of the post-truth phenomenon from science denial through the rise of "fake news," from our psychological blind spots to the public's retreat into "information silos." What, exactly, is post-truth? Is it wishful thinking, political spin, mass delusion, bold-faced lying? McIntyre analyzes recent examples — claims about inauguration crowd size, crime statistics, and the popular vote — and finds that post-truth is an assertion of ideological supremacy by which its practitioners try to compel someone to believe something regardless of the evidence. Yet post-truth didn't begin with the 2016 election; the denial of scientific facts about smoking, evolution, vaccines, and climate change offers a road map for more widespread fact denial. Add to this the wired-in cognitive biases that make us feel that our conclusions are based on good reasoning even when they are not, the decline of traditional media and the rise of social media, and the emergence of fake news as a political tool, and we have the ideal conditions for post-truth. McIntyre also argues provocatively that the right wing borrowed from postmodernism — specifically, the idea that there is no such thing as objective truth — in its attacks on science and facts. McIntyre argues that we can fight post-truth, and that the first step in fighting post-truth is to understand it.
Does truth matter in the age of Post-Truth? by Matthew d'Ancona
“Post Truth” was elevated from theory to brand when Oxford Dictionaries selected it as word of the year in 2016. The accompanying definition was helpful, too: “ circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” This gets right to

Desmond-Hellman is of course far from alone in alighting on this issue: the now ubiquitous neologism, 'post-truth,' identifies a recent anxiety, among policy- makers, journalists, academics, and many of the other ideological architects of late capitalism, that following the election of Donald Trump, as well as
A brief history of post-truth in medicine | The BMJ
This is the age of lies, as truth is trampled and falsity flourishes, its reach grotesquely amplified by social media and the internet. Or so believe many commentators dismayed by Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, climate change deniers, antivaccine campaigners, and the power of Hollywood stars whose
We've been told we're living in a post-truth age. Don't believe it.
The coronation of the man who lied a thousand times, a champion of “alternative facts,” had brought us from the age of truthiness to the era of post-truth—2016's word of the year. In a span of several weeks after Trump's inauguration, Slate announced that “It's Time to Give Up on Facts,” Rolling Stone
Reflections on Post-Truth | WZB
There are many signs that we have entered a 'post-truth' era defined by the burial of 'objective facts' thanks to a public avalanche of 'appeals to emotion and personal belief', as the Oxford English Dictionary states. Critics of this 'post-truth' trend like to stress the political dangers of growing government secrecy, the lies of
Is Post-Modernism to Blame for our Post-Truth World? - LSE
Is our current situation the inevitable outcome of the intellectual adventuring of the twentieth century that critiqued grand narratives and challenged absolutetruths? Or should we call upon the critical scepticism of post-modernism and post -structuralism with renewed vigour, to better see through the smoke

We have to rethink what "educated" means in a post-truth world
It used to be fairly easy to explain what it means to be educated. Education involves schooling, and as a general rule, the more schooling you have, the better educated you become. Unfortunately, as I will argue below, that answer may no longer be sufficient; there is evidence to suggest that the causal link
